The Association of Fish Farmers and Aquaculture of Nigeria, Bayelsa chapter, solicited the support of both the federal and state governments to advance the industry in Nigeria.
Mr Agwana Weneyo, the state Chairman of the association, lamented in Yenagoa that fish farming had been neglected due to insufficient support from government. He said that fish farming and aquaculture were lucrative businesses which will should be supported by government at all levels.
“Lack of support in terms of funding is the major challenge in the business and access to bank loan is difficult due to huge collateral” Mr Weneyo said. “I am appealing to the Federal Government to create a platform through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, to ensure that fish farmers are given the needed attention. This aspect of agriculture can go a long way to create jobs to boost the nation’s economic development.’’
The chairman urged job seekers to engage in fish farming as the business requires little starting capital.
“Bayelsa has the natural conducive environment for fish farming; all we need is the support of the government.’’
