Nigeria has finally joined the league of countries that export Yams to the United Kingdom, Europe, U.S.A, Canada and Asia.
Nigeria is the largest producer of Yam in the world and there is no reason why countries that produce les Yam than Nigeria should rank Number in exports by volume.
Even though the first consignment of Yam export to the United States was initially rejected, the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh revealed that all efforts are being put in place to ensure the required standards are met.
It is pertinent for all to note that with dwindling oil revenues, there is a strong need for Nigeria to identify and explore other sources of foreign exchange earnings.
In order to ensure the Yams remain fresh, air conditioners will be installed in stores at the farms, Ports and warehouses where the Yams will be stored and packaged before export.
Subsequent exports will be properly packaged so the Yams can arrive the destination in good form with minimal spoilage.
