Ogun State has now joined the league of states producing its own branded rice in commercial quantities.

The brand is the local Ofada which is widely cultivated in Ogun state. Now the cultivation, processing and packaging has improved. The rice is packaged in difference sizes which make it easily and readily available and affordable for the consumer.

MITROS Rice is packaged in 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 kilogram bags.

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, launched the branded rice MITROS at the Farmers Market, Asero, Abeokuta the Ogun State capital on Thurday 21/12/2017.

About 110,000 bags of MITROS Rice made up of Ofada and parboiled rice. Ogun State has comparative advantage in the production of Ofada rice variety. The production facility is located at Egua land in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Ogun State governor reiterated the fact that his administration would continue to partner with the Federal government and the organized private sector to ensure Ogun state attains self-sufficiency in food production.

MITROS is the acronym for Mission to Rebuild Ogun state.

The Head of State, President Muhammadu Buhari was represented at the ceremony by the Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu. He said that in the last two and a half years under President Buhari, the government had taken concrete steps to revamp the Agricultural sector of Nigeria’s economy.

The Ogun state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Adepeju Adebajo, said that one of the aims of the MITROS Rice initiative was

  • poverty eradication and improvement of the well-being of the people of Ogun State
  • Job creation – the mill would create jobs for the indigenous farmers in the State
  • Reduction of dependency on smuggled/imported foreign rice.

The good news is that a 50 kg bag of Mitros rice would sell for N 11,500 only.

We at BELVYNA congratulate the Ogun State government for this laudable achievement. However we are hopeful that the program will be sustained to the extent that the MITROS (Ofada) Rice can hit the export market in 2018 especially the 1kg and 5kg packs. We are aware of the fact that it is in high demand in Europe and America.
